Welcome to Year 2!

Year 2

The adults in our class are:

Ms Davies and Mrs Trillow

What we are learning about this term:

English: This term, we will be reading ‘Grandma Bird’ and ‘Boundless Sky’ by Amanda Addison, as well as a range of texts that complement the topic, 'Beside the Seaside.' Our reading will include poems, non-fiction texts, articles and letters, which will also provide plenty of opportunity for discussion as well!

Through our different writing activities, the children will consolidate their learning from Year 1 and build on this further by learning to use apostrophes and commas in their writing as well.

Maths: In maths, the children will be ordering and comparing numbers to 100, and they will learn to partition numbers up to 100 into tens and ones using a place value chart. The children will be using their knowledge of number bonds to 10 to learn bonds to 100, and they will be adding and subtracting within 100 as well. They will learn to add and subtract any two 2-digit numbers, and say what is 10 more and 10 less than any number within 100. For shape, the children will be learning to draw 2D shapes, and they will learn and use the terms vertices, edges and faces to describe 2D and 3D shapes.  They will also learn to say how many lines of symmetry a shape has.

The Big Picture: Our topic this term is 'Beside the Seaside.'

We will launch our new topic during our first week of the term through fun-filled immersive experiences: enjoying a Punch and Judy show, making sandcastles, creating and enjoying eating our own sandwiches, and looking through some Victorian artefacts to compare seaside adventures from the past to the present day.  We will also be looking at some of the artwork of the famous artist Claude Monet, and we will create our own interpretations of his famous piece, 'Breaking Waves'.

Science: In science, the children will be learning to name and describe the properties of everyday materials. ?

They will compare and group together a variety of everyday materials based on their simple physical properties. They will ?identify and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper and cardboard for different uses.  ?

PE: In PE this term we will be practising skills across the sports of football, basketball and gymnastics.?

The children will practise and develop key skills for each sport, including passing, moving, marking and shooting. The children will also develop attacking and defending principles while gaining a greater understanding of the tactical side through game-related practice.

Morning Snacks:

During the morning, children are welcome to have a snack. We always have fresh fruit/ vegetables available for children, but if you would rather send your child in with their own snack from home, then this is absolutely fine. May I politely ask that you refrain from sending in anything that may contain nuts, and may I also request that you send in a healthy morning snack as opposed to crisps, chocolate biscuits etc. Thank you for your support :)
